Getting Started with Dynamic Currency Conversion

What is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)?

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a feature on Teya’s card machines that allows cardholders to choose whether to pay in their home currency or in your business's currency.

This feature is enabled by default but can be switched off at any time.

Does enabling DCC incur any extra costs?

No, enabling DCC on your card machine is free and does not affect your settlement. You will always receive the amount you entered into the terminal in your local currency, regardless of the customer’s choice.

Do customers pay extra for DCC?

When using your terminal, customers can choose between:

  • Paying in your business's currency using DCC, with the exchange rate displayed on the terminal.
  • Paying in their card’s currency, with the exchange rate determined by their bank.

DCC Scheme Regulations

  • Cardholders must be given the choice to accept or decline DCC;

  • Merchants and staff must not influence customers to choose DCC;

  • DCC does not affect a customer’s right to request a refund under applicable laws or card scheme rules.

Compliance with Card Scheme Rules

To remain compliant:

  • Customers must not be pressured into selecting DCC. They should be fully informed of the exchange rate and any applicable margins before making a decision.

  • When processing a DCC transaction, customers must be offered receipt from your card machine instead of your ePos device. ePOS receipts do not display the final amount in the customer’s currency, which may cause confusion about the exact amount charged.

Teya ensures that customers:

  • Clearly see the exchange rate and any charges on the terminal screen before confirming payment.

  • Receive a receipt that includes a DCC acceptance statement: "I have been offered a choice of currencies and have chosen to accept DCC and pay in [XXX] at the exchange rate offered by Teya."
