Print order tickets and customer receipts with Catalogue

Catalogue can print order tickets for preparation areas such as a kitchen, bar, or coffee station. It can also print customer receipts instead of using your Card Machine. You can use one printer for either purpose or for both.

Printing is available in the Teya App on a phone or tablet and in the Teya Payment app on your Card Machine.

Before you start

You need:

  • A supported thermal receipt printer. Catalogue currently supports the Epson TM-m30III.
  • Standard 80 mm thermal receipt paper.
  • One of these connections:
    • A USB-C cable from the printer to your tablet.
    • A network cable from the printer directly to your router.
  • Permission to manage your catalogue. Printer setup is a manager-level task.

Choose a connection

  • USB-C: Use this when the printer is near the tablet, such as at a counter. The same cable also charges the tablet while the printer is switched on.
  • Network cable: Use this when the printer is further away, such as in a kitchen. Connect the printer directly to your router. Do not connect it through a switch, Wi-Fi extender, mesh satellite, or guest network.

Add a printer

  1. Open the printer cover.
  2. Insert the paper roll and close the cover.
  3. Connect the power adapter and switch on the printer.
  4. Connect the printer to your tablet with a USB-C cable, or connect it to your router with a network cable.
  5. Open Catalogue.
  6. Tap the settings icon.
  7. Tap Printers.
  8. Tap Add printer.
  9. Select your printer from the list.
  10. Enter a name that your staff will recognise, such as Kitchen, Bar, or Counter.
  11. Select the categories that should print order tickets at this printer.
  12. Leave all categories unselected if you want to use the printer only for customer receipts.
  13. Tap Connect.

The printer now appears in your Printers list. An order ticket prints there the next time you charge an order containing an item from an assigned category.

You can check a printer’s connection, cover, and paper status by tapping it in the Printers list. You can also print a test page from this screen.

Remove a printer

  1. Open Catalogue.
  2. Tap the settings icon.
  3. Tap Printers.
  4. Tap the printer you want to remove.
  5. Tap Remove printer.

Removing a printer also removes the category assignments linked to it. If the printer was used for customer receipts, receipts return to your Card Machine. To use the printer again, you must add it as a new printer.

Print customer receipts on a printer

Order tickets and customer receipts use separate settings. A printer can print receipts even if no order-ticket categories are assigned to it.

  1. Open Catalogue.
  2. Tap the settings icon.
  3. Tap Printers.
  4. Switch on Print receipts on a printer.
  5. Under Receipt printer, select the printer you want to use.
  6. Choose when receipts should print:
    • Print receipts automatically on: A receipt prints with every sale.
    • Print receipts automatically off: A receipt does not print automatically. Print it from the sale when the customer asks for one.

If Print receipts on a printer is switched off, customer receipts continue to print on your Card Machine as before.

You can use the same printer for order tickets and receipts. For example, a counter printer can print both kitchen tickets and customer receipts.

Choose where order tickets print

Catalogue sends order tickets according to the item’s category. You can also set a different printer for an individual item.

Assign a category to a printer

  1. Open Manage items.
  2. Select the category.
  3. In Orders print at, select one or more printers.

Every item in that category prints at the selected printers, including items added to the category later.

Set an individual item’s printing behaviour

When you add or edit an item, choose one of these options:

OptionWhat it does
Inherit from categoryPrints wherever the item’s category prints. This is the default.
Do not printDoes not print an order ticket, even if the category has a printer assigned.
Print at these printersPrints at the selected printers for this item only. You can select more than one printer.

For example, you can send a burger ticket to both the grill and fryer if both areas need to prepare it.

An item with no printer assigned to it, and no printer assigned to its category, does not print an order ticket. There is no error message.

What happens when you tap Charge?

When you tap Charge, Catalogue splits the order by printer. Each printer receives a ticket containing only the order lines assigned to it.

For example, if Drinks is assigned to the bar and Food is assigned to the kitchen, an order containing a coffee and sandwich prints one ticket at each location.

If automatic receipt printing is enabled, the customer receipt prints on the selected receipt printer as well.

The sale completes even if a printer is slow or unavailable. A successful print does not show a separate confirmation; the paper coming out confirms that it printed.

If a ticket fails

You receive one notification per order. It explains what did not print, the likely reason, and what to do next.

There are no error codes. Failed tickets are kept and print automatically when the printer becomes available again.

A badge appears on the Catalogue settings icon while one or more printers cannot be reached.

View print history and reprint a ticket

Each order keeps a record of its tickets and their status, including:

  • Printed.
  • Waiting.
  • Held.
  • Failed, with the reason.

To view or reprint a ticket:

  1. Open the order.
  2. View the ticket preview and print status.
  3. Tap Print or Reprint.

If you have replaced a printer, a reprinted ticket is sent to the printer currently assigned to that category.

Add a customer name to order tickets

You can ask for the customer’s name when the sale is charged. The name prints at the top of every order ticket for that sale and appears in the order history and order details.

Turn on customer names

  1. Open Catalogue.
  2. Tap the settings icon.
  3. Switch on Ask for customer name at charge.

This setting applies to your whole store.

What happens at Charge

When staff tap Charge, Catalogue asks for a name before payment continues.

  • Enter the customer’s name and confirm it.
  • Tap Skip if the customer does not want to provide a name.
  • If the name is skipped, no name appears on the ticket or order.

Names are kept short, at around 20 characters, so they fit on one printed line. If a Payment is cancelled or fails and staff return to charge the order, the entered name remains available.

What printing does not support yet

  • Order numbers are not printed on order tickets. You can print the customer’s name instead.
  • Cash drawers and buzzers connected to the printer are not supported.
  • One identical ticket cannot be mirrored to two printers. Each printer receives its own ticket containing only the lines assigned to it.

Troubleshoot printing problems

The printer does not appear in Add printer

Try these steps:

  1. Check that the printer is switched on and its power light is steady.
  2. If you are using USB-C, disconnect and reconnect the cable at both ends. Use the cable supplied with the printer if possible, because some USB-C cables only carry power.
  3. If you are using a network cable, connect it directly from the printer to the router.
  4. Check that the tablet is connected to the Wi-Fi provided by the same router.
  5. Move the tablet off a guest network.
  6. On an iPad or iPhone, open iOS Settings, find Teya, and make sure Local Network permission is enabled.
  7. Restart the printer, wait 30 seconds, and tap Add printer again.

The printer is connected but nothing prints

For order tickets:

  • Open Manage items.
  • Check that the relevant category has the printer selected under Orders print at.
  • Check that the item is not set to Do not print.

For customer receipts:

  • Open Printers.
  • Check that Print receipts on a printer is switched on.
  • Check that the correct printer is selected under Receipt printer.
  • If you expect a receipt with every sale, check that Print receipts automatically is on.

If you use more than one tablet or Card Machine, add the printer and configure its assignments on each device used for selling.

A ticket prints on the wrong printer

  1. Open Manage items.
  2. Check the category’s Orders print at setting.
  3. Check whether the item has an individual override under Print at these printers.
  4. Correct the assignment.
  5. Open the order’s print history and tap Reprint to send the missed ticket to the correct printer.

The ticket is blank

The paper roll may be facing the wrong way.

  1. Open the printer cover.
  2. Remove the paper roll.
  3. Turn it so the paper feeds from underneath the roll towards you.
  4. Close the cover.

To check the printing side, scratch the paper with a fingernail. The side that leaves a dark mark should face the print head.

Printing is faint or patchy

  • Use good-quality 80 mm thermal paper.
  • Let the printer cool, then wipe the print head with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Keep the paper dry. Damp thermal paper can print grey or unevenly.

The printer light is blinking or an error light is on

A blinking or error light usually means the printer needs attention. Check the following in order:

  1. Open and close the cover until it clicks.
  2. Check that paper is loaded, feeding straight, and not jammed.
  3. Replace the roll if it is nearly finished.
  4. If a ticket tore instead of cutting, remove any paper from the cutter.
  5. Switch the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and switch it on again.

Catalogue can also show cover open, paper out, or paper low in the printer details.

Tickets stopped after the Wi-Fi or router restarted

Wait about a minute for the printer and tablet to reconnect. Tickets that failed during the interruption print automatically when the printer is available again.

If the printer is still disconnected after a couple of minutes:

  1. Restart the printer.
  2. If it does not reconnect, remove it from Printers.
  3. Add it again.

The tablet is not charging from the printer

The printer charges the tablet through USB-C only while the printer is switched on.

  1. Check that the printer is switched on.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect the USB-C cable at the tablet.
  3. Try the tablet’s own charger to check whether the cable is the cause.

Frequently asked questions

Which printers does Catalogue support?

Catalogue currently supports the Epson TM-m30III. You can connect it to a tablet using USB-C or to a router using a network cable.

Can I set up printing on my Card Machine?

Yes. Printer setup, order tickets, and customer receipt printing work in the Teya Payment app on your Card Machine and in the Teya App on a phone or tablet.

Do I need an internet connection for printing?

Catalogue needs an internet connection to take sales. The printer connects through USB-C or a network cable. Tickets and receipts do not go through the internet connection.

Do I need to set up printing on every device?

Yes. Printer setup and assignments are stored on the device where you configure them. If you sell from more than one device, configure the printer and its assignments on each device.

Can two printers print the same ticket?

No. Catalogue does not mirror one identical ticket to two printers. You can, however, assign an individual item to more than one printer so each printer receives its own ticket containing that item.
