Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a feature on your Teya Card Machine that allows international customers to pay in their home currency rather than your local currency. This gives them transparency regarding the exact amount they will be charged by their bank.
This guide explains how to enable the feature, process these payments compliantly, and understand the supported currencies.
What is DCC?
When you enable DCC, the Card Machine automatically detects if a customer is using an international card. It then offers them a choice:
- Pay in your business's currency: The exchange rate will be determined later by their card issuer (the customer won't know the final cost immediately).
- Pay in their home currency: The Card Machine displays the exact exchange rate and final amount immediately.
Enabling DCC is free and does not affect your Settlements. You will always receive the exact amount you entered in your local currency.
Enabling or disabling DCC
This feature is turned On by default for all eligible Card Machines. You can switch it off at any time using your Manager PIN.
- Tap the Menu icon on the top right of the screen.
- Select Payment Settings.
- Enter your Manager PIN.
- Toggle the Dynamic Currency Conversion switch to On or Off.
Processing a DCC transaction
The workflow for a DCC payment is slightly different from a standard sale because the customer must interact with the screen to make a choice.
- Enter the transaction amount on the main screen and tap Charge.
- Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card.
- Customer Action: The screen will display the amount in both your local currency and the customer's home currency.
- Ask the customer to select their preferred option on the screen.
- The payment is processed and authorised.
- The Card Machine prints a receipt showing the conversion rate and the final amount.

DCC is currently available for Visa and Mastercard transactions.

Important compliance rules
To comply with card scheme regulations (Visa and Mastercard), you must follow these rules during every DCC transaction:
- No influence: You must not pressure or influence the customer to choose one currency over the other. The choice must be entirely theirs.
- Full transparency: The customer must be able to see the exchange rate and any markups displayed on the terminal before they pay.
- Paper receipts: You must offer the customer the receipt printed by the Teya Card Machine, not just your EPOS receipt.
- Why? EPOS receipts often do not display the final converted amount or the required legal disclaimer ("I have been offered a choice of currencies..."). Failing to provide the correct receipt can lead to disputes.
